Lived in Interiors

27 March 2026

A lived-in interior is one that feels authentic rather than arranged — a space shaped by the materials, textures and objects you've chosen to live alongside over time.

From expressive stone and raw wood to woven fibres and functional fabrics, surfaces are increasingly chosen for how they feel as much as how they look.

Tactile textures add a real sense of depth and character to a space and are the perfect way to add colour and interest. Think, beautiful woven rugs or raw wooden shelves immediately drawing the eye in and inviting you — perhaps instinctively — to run your hand across and feel every thread or knot.

Our love for sustainably sourced timber here at Tom Raffield is no secret. The subtle grains in our steam-bent wood add character to our lighting designs, before our unique organic shapes are even created.

Imperfection vs Perfection

Not every material suits every home - or lifestyle. It's worth thinking about your day-to-day, your household, and how much upkeep you genuinely want to take on. Natural materials like wood and marble do benefit from care, but they also offer something unique in return - character.

Wood is wonderfully forgiving. It evolves over time, developing a richness and warmth that reflects how it's lived with. Gentle marks, subtle shifts in tone, and a soft patina all add to its story, making each piece feel personal and grounded. This same natural beauty is what makes wooden lighting so appealing - casting a warm, atmospheric glow while bringing texture and softness into a space. It's why, at Tom Raffield, we offer finishes in timbers such as walnut, ash and oak - each bringing its own depth of tone and distinctive grain, and all lending themselves beautifully to a relaxed, lived-in interior.

Rooted in minimalism, the Kanna Drum Lighting Range radiates warmth, whilst allowing the distinctive fingerprint found in this natural material to shine.

Embracing nature's design, our Morna Pendant takes inspiration from looping, arched shapes of blooming wild flowers found along the south west coast path at Lamorna Cove.

A tactile approach

The joy of a lived-in interior and of mixing different natural materials often comes from the simple pleasure of reaching out and touching. Feeling whether a plush wool rug is as soft as it looks, or if a stone floor carries the same texture underfoot as it does to the eye. It's about indulging the senses - touch, sight, and even smell - grounding us and connecting us to nature.

Take our Gwenen Pendant for example: the mesmerising fusion of craftsmanship and nature-inspired design is calling out to be touched and explored, to understand how the complex layering of the loops comes to be interwoven.

Material choice

Remember, not all materials are the same, nor do they offer the same texture or character. When it comes to metal, you wouldn't expect the same look from a brass patina as you would a brushed chrome, and in the same way our selection of wood is entirely different too.

Our wood types at Tom Raffield offer variety and durability, whether you opt for a dark, moody walnut, classic oak or our ebonised tulip wood used in our Noctis Lighting Range. Remember, a lived-in interior is less about perfection and more about personality. It's a space that evolves with you, where materials tell stories, textures invite touch, and every corner feels authentic.
