As warm sunshine starts to fill our homes, we welcome back the long awaited summer. With alfresco dining and sun-soaked adventures just around the corner, we thank our homes for providing us the much needed solace this past winter. We have been full steam ahead here in Cornwall. Over the past couple of months we’ve been gearing up to launch our new lighting and homeware designs, whilst conquering some more of our sustainability goals. Thank you for your endless support, we’re honoured to be able to share our passion with you.

What is your average day at Tom Raffield?
CS: “Every day of the week is different. From developing new product designs to working on improvements around the workshop floor, through making jigs or improving processes, I am always thinking ahead to ensure we get the most out of each day. I often work closely with Tom Raffield to progress new concepts or designs, ensuring each design is made sustainably and to last a lifetime. Occasionally, I will help the lighting workshop in crafting or help to steam bend some furniture. To answer your question, my day is anything but average!”
What is your favourite product or range?
CS: “This constantly changes. But at the moment, the No. 1 Pendant holds my top position. They are the most skilled lights to craft, with each one ending up being truly unique. However, there are a couple of designs coming soon that I think will take the top spot.”

What is the best skill you have learnt from your time at Tom Raffield?
HC: “This is easy – steam bending! Before Tom Raffield, steam bending was unknown to me but now I am enamoured by it. The results are always breath taking, and I find the whole process so interesting.”
Why is sustainability important to you?
HC: “As an avid gardener, I see the effects of global warming effecting my surroundings; making it increasingly difficult to get a healthy, reliable crop. As we continue to experience the hottest summers and coldest winters yet, my concern grows on how we are going to be able to grow food. This concern is what feeds my sustainability practices, ingraining into me how important it is to be kind to the planet.”

SS: “Lighting is important in a room, too much or too little, and it can cause discomfort - especially when working with computer screens. We knew the Skipper Wall Light would be a perfect addition to this room. Whether on or off, the natural grain of the wood and intricate design adds an element of texture to the space”.

The best way to bring in brighter hues without overwhelming your space…
Mellow yellow. Whilst yellow can often be shied away from within homes, it can be a beautiful, happy tone that adds a calming backdrop to your space.
Pretty in pink. Pink is the ultimate soothing tone. Not only is it scientifically proven to provide a sense of calm, it is also a neutral tone that’s easy to style - making it a perfect bedroom and living room colour.
Bold blue. Blue tones are always a great option: versatile, dependable, and effective. There are hundreds of different blues out there so you shouldn’t have a problem finding the perfect tone for your space.
