Winter Comforts
There is no direct translation of the Scandinavian word 'hygge' into English mainly because 'hygge' is more of a feeling than anything else... and after all, feelings are so personal they're often hard to describe. The closest we can get is a sense of cosiness and comfort - both qualities that we feel every home should embody.
Here's five simple tips on how to create a sense of hygge in your home this winter and ride out those winter blues...
Set the mood...
Warm and welcoming – ambient lighting is what we all should be aiming for in our homes. Achieving a balance between practical yet relaxing is key - you want to be able to walk confidently around your space, yet not be faced with any glare from light bulbs.
Utilising a range of light fixtures is a good way to create an ambient mood and diffuse soft task lighting around a room. Instead of reaching for your main ceiling light switch, instead turn on (ideally dimmable) wall lights, table lamps and floor lights to create soft, mellowing illumination that isn't as directional as an overhead fixture. The aim is to create pools of light at different levels to add warmth to your space.
-
Stem Wall Light. Dropping splashes of light from its Helix shade to bring focus from the shadows; the Stem is the ultimate balance between form and function.
-
Use the Skipper Floor Light to illuminate specific areas, to layer light and create ambiance in your space.
-
Radiating light in all directions, the Hanter Table Light blends an inviting ambience with a sharp design aesthetic.

The contemporary Loer Pendant is suited to an array of interiors and property styles and looks particularly striking suspended in clusters.
Get comfy
If we're spending more time inside (lockdowns and cooler weather included) then we may as well be comfortable. There's nothing like curling up with a good book and a cup of hot tea or coffee after a long, blustery winter walk.
Our steam bent Arbor Furniture Range is ergonomically designed for maximum comfort and fitted with contract-grade upholstery to create the ultimate place to kick back at the end of a day's work. For added snuggle-factor cosy up with one of our carefully chosen Sheepskins for a decadent, luxurious experience, or feel the gentle, weightless curve of our Amble Hanging Seat whilst you lie back and rest.
Put your feet up
If you're going to indulge in some relaxing downtime - you may as well do the job properly. A versatile footstool may just be the make or break of any hygge inspired living space...
Our Beeble Pouffe is as multi-functional as it is stylish. The perfect place to rest weary feet or sit comfortably at a lower height, the Beeble Pouffe's playful design means it can be picked up and moved around to offer seating in response to a myriad of spaces.
Light the fire
There’s nothing that says hygge more than a roaring fire. As well as keeping you toasty in the colder winter months the golden glow from the burning embers will help set the ambient mood of your space.
With our steam bent Log Loop as the perfect companion, you can enjoy evenings in front of the flames that transform your living room into a Scandinavian log cabin.
Self care
Taking time out of your day for yourself and pursuing activities or pastimes you find fulfilling is a great way to weave some self-care into your routine.
Albeit a yoga class, taking the time to make a nourishing homecooked meal, tending to your indoor garden, a long soak in the bath, a face mask, lighting a favourite candle or playing relaxing music - regularly indulging yourself in these small rituals will help to build a foundation of inner harmony and help you achieve the all-important feeling of hygge.
