Deck the Walls - Sustainable Christmas Decoration
Decorations shouldn't just be reserved for the tree...we're adding festive flourishes to our interiors with natural foliage and glowing lighting designs, because lets face it, we could all do with some early Christmas cheer this year.
The time is nigh. With the start of December looming, our thoughts are turning to decorating our interiors for the fast-approaching festive season. Whether you're an early decorator, or a last-minute perfectionist, our nature-inspired decorating ideas are sure to bring some much-needed Christmas cheer to your home this year.
Bring the outdoors inside
Foraging from your own garden and bringing greenery inside to decorate with is an attractive, inexpensive and easy way to add a festive flourish to your home. Add sprigs of holly to picture frames, berries to mirrors and hang mistletoe above doorways; the natural, rustic green tones are a nod to Nordic Christmas tradition and the scent of fresh-cut greenery will appeal to the senses all Christmas long.
TR Tip: We particularly love the look of eucalyptus, trailing ivy, holly berries, pine cones, silver birch branches and small cuttings of fir tree. Cuttings can also be dried out to create handmade wreaths and decorations for the following years' Christmas decor - it's a win win.
If minimalist greenery isn't quite your style, opting for paper and wooden decorations that you'll reuse and love for years to come is a much more sustainable choice than purchasing glittering, plastic ornaments. Adorn your space with paper chains, baubles made from recycled materials and gifts wrapped in brown paper to create a rustic theme with a green-fingered approach the planet will thank you for.
Let the light shine
Christmas lights don't just have to be about the tree. Ensuring your home radiates a warm, cosy glow will help amplify the Christmas magic and really set the scene for time spent with the family, game playing or watching your favourite festive films.
Use indirect lighting to your advantage to create a soft luminosity that reaches all four corners of the room by mixing table, floor, wall and pendant lighting designs together. Opting for an array of fixtures ensures you'll always be able to find the right level of ambience to suit your mood.
TR tip: dark evenings are the perfect opportunity to illuminate designs that create a light spectacle in your home; aim for shadow shows that will wow guests and please family members alike.
Don't forget to light candles around your space for extra cosiness and keep the fire stoked to insight the feeling of ultimate relaxation and luxury.
Finishing touches
Finish off your Christmas decorating with throws, blankets, rugs and cushions that will add comfort and warmth to your home. A layered look creates a cosy effect that you (and your guests) won't be able to resist... the perfect place to curl up and finish that book you've been meaning to read.
TR tip: we love the organic, fluffy aesthetic of our sheepskin rugs draped over the arms of our favourite chairs, benches and stools to add some Scandi-inspired warmth to a space.
