Lighting Cheat Sheet
The A to Z of lighting your home…

Lighting is one of the most important elements of any home. It can set the mood, create a focal point, and even make a small space feel larger. But with so many different types of lighting available, it can be difficult to know where to start. That's why we've put together this lighting cheat sheet, packed with tips and tricks to help you create the perfect lighting scheme for your home.
The Basics
Use the right bulb temperature. The colour temperature of your light bulbs can have a big impact on the mood of a room. Warm light, which has a yellow or orange hue, is perfect for creating a cosy and inviting atmosphere. Cool light, which has a blue or white hue, is ideal for creating a bright and energising space.

When choosing light bulbs, pay attention to the Kelvin rating. This number indicates the colour temperature of the light. Bulbs with a Kelvin rating of 2000K to 3000K are considered warm, while bulbs with a Kelvin rating of 5000K to 6500K cool. All the bulbs we offer are all on the warmer side, with the coolest (Tala Porcelain II and Crompton 11823) sitting at 2700K, and the warmest (Tala Elva) sitting at 2200K.
Consider the size of your space. The size of your space will also affect your lighting choices. In a large space, you'll want to use a variety of light sources to ensure the illumination is balanced and functional. In a smaller space, you can use fewer light sources, but make sure they're powerful enough to illuminate the entire room as needed.

Don't be afraid to experiment with different types of lighting. Whilst it can be tempting to add as many lighting designs as possible, consider what the space really needs, and let the beauty of the designs you do invest in speak for themselves.
Get creative
There are no rules when it comes to lighting, so don't be afraid to get creative. Use lighting to add personality to your home and make it your own. With a little planning and creativity, you can use lighting to transform your home into a beautiful and inviting space.
Layer your lighting. One of the most important things to remember about lighting is that it should be layered. This means using a variety of different types of lighting to create a well-lit space.

Start with ambient lighting, which is the overall light in a room. This can be provided by pendant lights or chandeliers. Next, add task lighting, which is used to illuminate specific areas for tasks such as reading or cooking. This can be provided by floor lamps or wall lights. Finally, add accent lighting, which is used to highlight specific features in a room, such as artwork or plants. This can be provided by sculptural wall or table lights.
Control the intensity. All of our floor lights come with a dimmable switch, allowing you to enhance or diminish the focus on certain areas of your space. Our ceiling pendants and wall lights can be wired in to suitable electrical systems to create dimmable designs. This allows you to fully control which of your favourite features or areas of your space is proudly emphasised and helps create depth in your interior.

Cast a spotlight. Use strategically placed directional wall lights to highlight artwork or architectural features. This creates a dramatic, gallery-like feel and draws attention to the focal points of the room.
Sculptural shelf lighting. Placing a statement table lamp on a shelf not only provides light but also acts as a sculptural art piece. Think about positioning it amongst books or plants to create a layered, visually interesting display. Introducing this can help set the mood and highlight different elements on the shelf.

Strength in numbers. Instead of a single overhead light in a stairway, use a series of wall lights or a cluster of pendant lights at varying heights above the staircase. This creates a visually appealing, and better lit passage through your home.
Free at last. Wireless lighting allows you to be clever with your space, moving from room to room with design impact and welcoming illumination – our portable designs leave you untethered to one space. Dimmable at the touch of a button, each rechargeable design is a helpful addition to your home from dusk until dawn.
