Tom Raffield wins at the Cornwall Sustainability Awards

With wood as our bread and butter sustainability will always remain a priority for us here at Tom Raffield - we use local timber wherever possible and sustainably managed woodlands for all of our lighting and furniture products. Tom’s own steam-bent wooden Grand Design’s home is no exception.

Which is why we’re so pleased that Tom’s home won Best Contribution to the Build Environment in the New Build category at the 2016 Cornwall Sustainability Awards. 

Designed in an innovative architectural take on our furniture and lighting, Tom’s low-impact timber house extension was built using 80% of wood from locally sourced woodlands including our own woodland on site, as well drawing on our low-energy steam-bent wood technique.

Some 3,000 tonnes of earth cleared from the site was used to reinforce the hillside in earth filled tyres and gabions. The house features eco-concrete flooring made from excess industrial material and a ground-source heat pump while wood waste was eventually used to make products in our furniture and lighting workshop.

Tom's idea was to capitalise on our own resources on site, not just in the way of materials but also skills.

We’re honoured to be up there with some great Cornish brands including Treagle Machinery, The Cornish Seaweed Company and ISO Spaces all doing their bit to improve sustainability in Cornwall and beyond.
